Make a Timeline in Microsoft Word – Set up the Table
This section explains how to make a timeline in Microsoft Word. The first section begins with the creation of a table, followed by work on its interior elements. So, first, set up the table, go through the processes, then repeat with me so you understand what I’m doing.
Step 1>
Open a new Microsoft Word document and navigate to the “Layout” tab. Select “Orientation” then “Landscape“
Step 2>
Go to the ribbon “Insert” tab > “Table” then “Insert table”.
Step 3>
Add values for rows and columns, select 13 for columns and 10 for rows, then click the Ok button.
Step 4>
Your table has been added; now click on the button in the top left corner of the table to choose the full table.
Step 5>
Select Height from the Layout menu and set the height to 1.5 cm.
Step 6>
If your table is larger than the page size, hold and drag down the vertical ruler of your page; if you can see the ruler, go to View and check the “Ruler” box in the “Show” group.
Step 7>
Place your cursor in the first row of the first column and press the Return Key (Enter key) to make some room for the header above the table.
Step 8>
Select the entire table once more and go to the Table Design tab.
Step 9>
Choose “View Gridlines” from the Border button’s dropdown menu.
Step 10>
Then choose “No border” from the same border dropdown.
Your table is now ready. We will continue further in this next section.
Make a Timeline in Microsoft Word – Creating Break Points
In this section, we will continue learning how to design a timeline in Microsoft Word by creating breakpoints for different stages of our timeline, which can be years, weeks, months, phase names, and so on.
Step 1>
To get started, draw a horizontal line in the center of the table by selecting the entire 5th row from the top, then going to borders and selecting the bottom border.
Step 2 >
Create a circle for each step as a breakpoint for that phase, using insert > shapes > circle.
Step 3>
Set them to the center of each column with a 1-column space between them, and color them.
Step 4>
Now we’ll build divisions for each phase; simply think first and then make sections; if you don’t want to think, you can just copy my idea.
Step 5>
Repeat for all six breakpoints.
Step 6>
To improve the presentation of our timeline, we must now hide the Gridlines.
Select the entire table, go to Borders, and then select “View Gridlines” again; this option was previously toggled on, and selecting it again will toggle it off.
Step 7>
This is how our timeline looks now that the breakpoints have been added and named.
Step 8>
Now, on each breakpoint, merge these four cells to add text for each step of our timeline; it can be targets, goals, doable, or anything you like.
After selecting the relevant cells, go to “Layout” and select Merge.
Step 9>
Add your text and customize the text position using the position boxes provided within the Alignment Group from the “Layout” Tab.
Step 10>
After adding and modifying the text for each breakpoint. This is the layout of our timeline.
This is how to create a timeline in Microsoft Word without the use of a template, a reference, a third-party add-in, or even an Internet connection.
